Markusse to succeed Smith as CEO of Royal Cosun

8 February 2017
Robert Smith is to stand down as President of the Executive Board and CEO of Royal Cosun on 1 June 2017. The managing director of Suiker Unie, Albert Markusse, will succeed him as Cosun’s CEO. Paul Mesters will succeed Albert Markusse as managing director of Suiker Unie.

Robert Smith (photograph) was appointed Cosun’s CEO in mid-2008 after previously holding the position of CFO on the Executive Board. The strategy he launched in 2012 has sharpened the group’s focus and Cosun is now well on course to achieve its goals. After nine years, Robert Smith thinks it is now time to make way for a new CEO and to take time to consider his professional future.

Albert Markusse joined Suiker Unie in 2007. Under his leadership Cosun’s sugar business was prepared for the abolition of the EU sugar quota system and the organisation is now ready for the new market conditions.

Paul Mesters has held a variety of positions at Suiker Unie and has been Director of Operations since 2009. In this capacity he is a member of Suiker Unie’s management team, which he will chair following his appointment as managing director.

The proposed appointments of Albert Markusse and Paul Mesters have been put to the Works Councils concerned for their advice.
